Watching a woodpecker dig his way through a tree trunk is something truly fascinating, and really shows you how marvelous its design is. If you were to bang your head against a tree as hard as a woodpecker does, you would end up with serious brain injury.
On the other hand, it might not be as exciting to watch a woodpecker do the same to your home. As amazing as it is that a woodpecker can do what it does, you don’t want it to do it to the place where you live.
Since woodpeckers are protected, what can you do?
One of the most effective methods is to use netting that will prevent the woodpecker from accessing your home, but this could be very unsightly and difficult to install. It is important to repair the damage the woodpecker causes right away since this can deter it from returning. By patching up and painting over the holes created and continue doing so, the woodpecker should eventually stop returning, but if you have some wood-destroying insects in your walls, it is possible that the woodpecker will keep coming back for the food.
